Design and Components The main components of a ball valve include: 1. Body – The outer casing, typically made of metal (such as stainless steel, brass, or carbon steel) or plastic (like PVC or CPVC), which houses the internal parts. 2. Ball – A spherical disc with a hole (bore) through its center. The ball can be floating or trunnion-mounted, depending on the design. 3. Seats – Rings made of resilient materials (PTFE, nylon, or metal) that ensure a tight seal between the ball and the body. 4. Stem – A shaft connected to the ball that transmits the rotational force from the handle or actuator. 5. Handle or Actuator – Used to manually or automatically rotate the ball. Handles are typically lever-operated, while actuators can be pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic. Types of Ball Valves 1. Floating Ball Valve – The ball is held in place by compression from the seats, allowing slight movement for a tight seal. 2. Trunnion Ball Valve – The ball is anchored at the top and bottom, reducing operating torque and making it suitable for high-pressure applications. 3. Full Port vs. Reduced Port – Full port valves have a bore size matching the pipe diameter, minimizing pressure drop, while reduced port valves have a smaller bore, increasing flow resistance. 4. Multi-Port Ball Valve – Features multiple flow paths (e.g., 3-way or 4-way) for diverting or mixing flows. 5. V-Port Ball Valve – The ball has a V-shaped bore for precise flow control, often used in throttling applications. Advantages - Quick Operation – A 90-degree turn fully opens or closes the valve. - Excellent Shutoff – Provides bubble-tight sealing, minimizing leakage. - Low Maintenance – Simple design with fewer moving parts reduces wear. - Versatility – Suitable for liquids, gases, and slurries across various temperatures and pressures.
