Pressure Relief Valve: Function, Types, and Applications A pressure relief valve (PRV) is a critical safety device designed to protect pressurized systems from overpressure conditions that could lead to equipment failure, explosions, or other hazardous situations. It operates by automatically releasing excess pressure when the system pressure exceeds a predetermined set point, ensuring safe operation and preventing catastrophic damage. Function and Working Principle The primary function of a pressure relief valve is to maintain system pressure within safe limits. When the pressure in a vessel, pipeline, or other equipment rises beyond the valve's set pressure, the valve opens to discharge fluid (gas, liquid, or steam) into a safe outlet, such as a flare stack or containment system. Once the pressure returns to normal, the valve reseals, preventing further fluid loss. PRVs operate based on a balance of forces. In spring-loaded designs, a spring holds the valve disc against the seat. When system pressure overcomes the spring force, the disc lifts, allowing fluid to escape. Pilot-operated PRVs use system pressure to control the opening and closing mechanism, offering higher accuracy and stability for large-scale applications. Types of Pressure Relief Valves 1. Spring-Loaded PRVs: The most common type, suitable for a wide range of pressures and temperatures. They are compact, cost-effective, and used in industries like oil and gas, chemical processing, and power generation. 2. Pilot-Operated PRVs: Ideal for high-capacity systems, these valves provide precise pressure control with minimal leakage. They are often used in refineries and petrochemical plants. 3. Safety Valves: Specifically designed for gas and steam applications, they open rapidly (pop action) when the set pressure is reached. 4. Thermal Relief Valves: Protect systems from overpressure caused by thermal expansion, commonly found in liquid-filled pipelines or storage tanks. Applications PRVs are essential in industries where pressure control is critical: - Oil & Gas: Protects pipelines, reactors, and storage tanks from overpressure due to blockages or temperature changes. - Chemical Processing: Prevents hazardous releases in reactors and distillation columns. - Power Plants: Safeguards boilers and steam systems from excessive pressure buildup. - HVAC & Refrigeration: Ensures safe operation of compressors and cooling systems. Maintenance and Standards Regular inspection and testing are crucial to ensure PRVs function correctly. Industry standards such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section VIII) and API 520/521 provide guidelines for design, installation, and maintenance. In summary, pressure relief valves are indispensable safety components that prevent equipment damage and protect personnel by maintaining system pressure within safe limits. Their reliability and efficiency make them vital across multiple industrial applications.

The pressure relief valve is a critical safety device designed to protect pipelines, tanks, and industrial systems from overpressure conditions. By automatically releasing excess pressure when it exceeds a preset limit, it ensures system safety, prevents equipment damage, and reduces the risk of accidents. Widely used in oil and gas, chemical processing, water treatment, HVAC, and power generation industries, pressure relief valves are available in various materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and bronze to handle diverse fluids and operating conditions. With high reliability, precise calibration, and low maintenance requirements, these valves are an essential component for safe and efficient industrial operations.
